What is ORGANIC?
Currently the USDA (United State Department of Agriculture) regulations allow products that contain 95-100% certified organic ingredients to use the USDA Organic seal. What these regulations do, is they prohibit the use of chemical fertilizers, various synthetic substances, irradiation, sewage sludge, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in organic production. Also with the prohibition of antibiotic and synthetic hormone use in organic meat. When any product is labeled “100% organic” or just “made with organic ingredients” then even the non-organic ingredients cannot be produced from GMOs. For example, products labeled as “made with organic ingredients” only require 70% of the ingredients to be organic, but 100% must be non-GMO.
What is GMO?
GMOs “Genetically Modified Organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology also called genetic engineering or GE. This experimental technology merges DNA from different species and it creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.
